The project to develop a universal character encoding scheme called Unicode was initiated in 1987 by Joe Becker, Lee Collins, and Mark Davis.
Based on experiences with the Xerox Character Code Standard (XCCS) since 1980, the origins of Unicode date to 1987, when Joe Becker from Xerox with Lee Collins and Mark Davis from Apple, started investigating the practicalities of creating a universal character set.
Ground work for the Unicode project began in late 1987 with initial discussions between three software engineers -- Joe Becker of Xerox Corporation, Lee Collins who was then with Xerox, and Mark Davis, then of Apple Corporation.
