During the late 1960s, Paul Taylor combined Western Union Teletype machines with modems to create teletypewriters, known as TTYs. He distributed these early, non-portable devices to the homes of many in the deaf community in St. Louis, Missouri. He worked with others to establish a local telephone wake-up service.
Robert Weitbrecht, a deaf scientist, developed the teletypewriter (TTY) in the 1960s.

Who invented the teletypewriter? In 1902, Charles Krum invented something he called the teletypewriter, picking up on the work started by Frank Pearne and funded by Joy Morton of the Morton Salt company. He filed a patent for his work. He and Morton then formed a new company called the Morkrum Printing Telegraph.
How did the Teletype machine work?In 1964, Robert Weitbrecht, a deaf electronic scientist, developed an acoustic coupler that converted sounds into text. Signals received by a standard telephone handset placed on a coupler were translated into a printed text message by the teletype machine. A flashing light alerted the deaf person receiving a call that the phone was ringing.
When did Teletype become a teleprinter? In 1924 the Teletype Corporation introduced a series of teletypewriters which were so popular that the name Teletype became synonymous with teleprinters in the United States. The teleprinter consists of a typewriter-like keyboard and a printer, powered by an electric motor.
Where did Teletype come from? The term "teletype" originated as a trademarked term for a brand of teleprinters created by the Teletype Corporation in 1928. Teletype Corporation's products became so ubiquitous that "teletype" evolved into a generic term synonymous with "teleprinter," especially in the field of computers.
