    • According to 3 sources
In the 1960s two Norwegian researchers, Helge Ingstad and Anne Stine Ingstad, discovered and excavated the Viking base camp at L'Anse aux Meadows (map) on the northern tip of Newfoundland—the first confirmed Viking outpost in the Americas.
L'Anse aux Meadows is the name of an archaeological site that represents a failed Viking colony of Norse adventurers from Iceland, in Newfoundland, Canada and occupied for somewhere between three and ten years. It is the first identified European colony in the new world, predating Christopher Columbus by nearly 500 years.
L'Anse aux Meadows (lit. 'Meadows Cove') is an archaeological site, first excavated in the 1960s, of a Norse settlement dating to approximately 1,000 years ago. The site is located on the northernmost tip of the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador near St. Anthony.

Where did Viking settlers come from in Canada? On the northernmost tip of the Canadian island of Newfoundland, there is an archaeological site that puts Viking settlers in Canada over one thousand years ago. Discovered in 1960, the site (known as L’Anse Aux Meadows) has a possible connection to Norse explorer Leif Ericson’s Vinland colony.
Was there a Norse encampment in Canada?Announced in 1961 as the only firm archaeological evidence for Norse presence in Canada by the Norwegian writer and explorer Helge Ingstad, L’Anse aux Meadows was a small Norse encampment in Newfoundland. The site comprises the footprints of eight main structures, visible above the ground as a series of rectilinear grassy ridges.
Was there a Viking Way Station in Canada? As reported in the November issue of National Geographic magazine, Sutherland first caught wind of another possible Viking way station in 1999, when she spotted two unusual pieces of cord that had been excavated from a Baffin Island site by an earlier archaeologist and stored at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Gatineau, Quebec.
Are there Viking sites south of Newfoundland? So far, no potential Viking sites have been discovered south of Newfoundland, although a coin, minted in Norway between A.D. 1065 and 1080, was discovered in Maine in 1957 by an amateur archaeologist at a Native American site. How the coin arrived at that site is a mystery.
