The peripheral nervous system, or PNS, is part of the nervous system. It consists of the nerves and ganglia which are outside the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord). The main function of the PNS is to connect the central nervous system (CNS) to the limbs and organs. The PNS is not protected by bone like the central nervous system.

Peripheral vascular disease is the inability of the vessels to supply oxygenated blood to a part of the body, either due to a block or damage. This leads to pain in the limbs. Peripheral neuropathy is the damage or incompetence of the peripheral nervous system which causes weakness. It is most commonly seen in diabetics since high levels of blood glucose may damage the nerves. People with peripheral neuropathy experience weakness, numbness and pain in their limbs. The key difference between both is that the former is due to the involvement of the blood vessels while the latter is due to the involvement of the nerves.
