  2. Map projections are methods of representing the curved surface of the earth on a flat map1.Some types of map projections are231:
    • Cylindrical projection: the meridians are mapped to parallel spaced vertical lines and latitudes are mapped to horizontal lines. An example is the Mercator projection.
    • Pseudocylindrical projection: the meridians are mapped to equally spaced vertical lines, but the latitudes are mapped to curved lines. An example is the Mollweide projection.
    • Conic projection: the meridians are mapped to equally spaced lines radiating from a point, and the latitudes are mapped to concentric arcs. An example is the Lambert projection.
    • Azimuthal projection: the meridians are mapped to equally spaced lines radiating from a point, and the latitudes are mapped to concentric circles. An example is the Orthographic projection.
    • Van der Grinten projection: a compromise projection that maps the earth to a circle, with curved meridians and latitudes. An example is the Robinson projection.
