    • The exact cause is not known. The possible causes include:
    • Certain genetic mutations confer a predisposition
    • It may be caused due to transformation of benign cartilage lesions into cancers
    • It may also occur following radiotherapy for other cancers
    • Patients of diseases such as the following are at increased risk of developing chondrosarcoma:
    • Ollier's disease
    • Multiple hereditary exostoses (MHE, a.k.a., osteochondromatoses)
    • Maffucci syndrome
    • Paget’s disease
    • Wilms’ tumor

    Complications

    If untreated for a prolonged period it may lead to

    • Periosteal reaction: formation of a new bone in response to injury or other stimuli
    • Loss of a limb (treatment may require amputation)
