  2. Stye and blepharitis are related but different eye conditions123:

    • Blepharitis: A chronic condition that can cause styes, as well as other symptoms like crusty flakes around the base of the eyelashes, red eyes, and swelling.
    Learn more:
Is a stye the same as blepharitis? A stye is a lump on your eyelid or eye. Most styes are from an infection of staphylococcus bacteria. Blepharitis sometimes causes a stye, but they are not the same condition. Blepharitis causes crusty flakes around the base of the eyelashes. Both conditions can lead to red eyes and swelling.

Styes are different from blepharitis mainly because blepharitis impacts the entire eyelid, whereas a stye is a single, pimple-like bump on one eye. Styes are also acute, typically lasting a few days or a week, whereas blepharitis is often chronic. Styes may be irritating and in some cases can be as large as a pea.

There’s definitely a connection between styes and blepharitis, but they’re not the same condition. Blepharitis is a chronic condition that can cause styes - styes are only one of several consequences of blepharitis. For example, blepharitis can also result in blurred vision and damage to the cornea, which aren’t the same as a stye.

Can blepharitis cause a stye?Blepharitis and styes can both make your eyelid appear red and swollen, but a stye usually forms in one specific spot as a pimple-like lump. Blepharitis usually affects the whole eyelid. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria are a common cause of both blepharitis and styes. They can also both be caused by blockages in the glands along the eyelid.

A stye, also called hordeolum, is a small abscess of the oil gland associated with an eyelash hair follicle. It typically contains Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Warm compresses can help styes heal faster. Moisten a clean, folded washcloth with warm water and hold it gently against the eye for 5 minutes several times a day for several days. The moist washcloth can be heated in a microwave. This will encourage a stye to open a drainage channel, allowing any pus to drain away. Pus should never be removed by squeezing. A stye that fails to drain can be lanced (opened) by a doctor.

Are blepharitis and styes the same thing?Bacteria can be the underlying cause of both blepharitis and styes. But styes are the result of an infection and cause a painful lump, while blepharitis is eyelid inflammation. If your eye is uncomfortable, you may wonder if you have either of these conditions or something else like a chalazion or conjunctivitis.
What causes blepharitis & styes?Blepharitis usually affects the whole eyelid. Staphylococcus aureus bacteria are a common cause of both blepharitis and styes.
