The 1956 Constitution of Pakistan failed for several reasons including being too lengthy and inflexible, having a unicameral legislature, adopting the controversial One Unit program, using a parliamentary system of government that was prone to misuse of power and undue interference by the head of state, failing to hold general elections, experiencing political commotion and a lack of strong leadership, becoming embroiled in games of power, and facing intervention from the army as well as economic and educational crises in the country that weakened political institutions and parties.
