Footage shows Russian and Chinese warships carrying out joint antisubmarine and air defence drills in the Pacific Ocean. The footage, reportedly filmed in the Sea of Okhotsk, in the western Pacific Ocean between Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, Japan's island of Hokkaido and the Russian island of Sakhalin, shows the vessels in the joint manoeuvres. The video shows a smaller vessel apparently acting as a mock enemy target and a helicopter taking off from the deck of one of the warships before the footage ends. The Russian Ministry of Defence (MoD) said: 'Joint task force of the Pacific Fleet and the People's Liberation Army Navy of China, within the framework of the Russian-Chinese naval exercise 'Beibu/Interaction - 2024', has crossed the La Perouse Strait and entered the Sea of Okhotsk. 'During the sea transit, the task force practised joint manoeuvring, countering unmanned boats of a hypothetical enemy, conducting reconnaissance, and monitoring the surface situation with the assistance of deck helicopters.' The Russian MoD added: 'Management of the joint task force is carried out by a unified expeditionary headquarters, located on one of the combat ships. 'In the near future, during the exercise, the task force of the Russian Navy and the PLA Navy will accomplish tasks related to repelling attacks from air assault forces of a hypothetical enemy, conducting anti-ship and antisubmarine defence at sea, addressing issues of joint manoeuvring, establishing communication and information exchange, among other matters. 'As part of the joint training for the exercise, the crews of ships from both countries will carry out artillery firings, as well as the use of antisubmarine and anti-aircraft weapon systems under a unified concept. 'The joint task force participating in the 'Beibu/Interaction - 2024' exercise from the Russian side includes large antisubmarine ships 'Admiral Panteleev' and 'Admiral Tributs', small antisubmarine ships 'MPK-82' and 'MPK-107', as well as the small missile ship 'Smerch'. 'The naval forces of the People's Liberation Army of China are represented by the destroyers 'Xining' and 'Wuxi', the frigate 'Linyi', and the comprehensive supply ship 'Taihu.' Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, in what the Kremlin is still calling a 'special military operation'. The conflict is still ongoing with public support from Europe and the United States fading and businesses reopening their ties with Russia. Deserters have fled both countries for safer climbs in Europe and Asia.

A tsunami warning was issued for Japan's Izu and Ogasawara islands after a 5.9 magnitude earthquake. The quake, off Torishima island, caused no major damage, but a small 50 cm tsunami hit Hachijo island. The Japan Meteorological Agency warned a larger one-meter tsunami could still follow.
