    • Causes may be due to physical obstruction or poor functioning of the intestine as a result of medications, surgery or nervous system disorders.
    • Physical obstruction:
    • Tumor
    • Hernia
    • Twisting of the intestines
    • Fecal impaction
    • Poor functional causes could be due to
    • Ileus: inability of bowel to contract as required
    • Certain medications
    • Nervous system disorders like Parkinson’s disease
    • Infections such as gastroenteritis or appendicitis

    Some forms of obstruction can be prevented. Prevention measures focus on preventing underlying causes:

    • Avoid heavy lifting to prevent hernia
    • Maintain a well balanced diet including sufficient fiber and fluids
    • Get colorectal cancer screening done after the age of 50

    Complications

    If untreated for a prolonged period it may lead to

    • Intestine rupture
    • Perforation (hole that forms in the intestines)
    • Infection
    • Tissue death
    • Sepsis, a life-threatening blood infection
    • Multiple organ failures
