The North Carolina CHIP program is called NC Health Choice for Children. Medicaid is a health care program that provides no-cost or low-cost coverage for low-income families and individuals. CHIP provides more coverage opportunities for children who may not be able to receive Medicaid because their family’s income is too high, but are unable to afford private coverage.

Within federal parameters, states can set CHIP program premium and cost sharing levels. In total, any family contribution to the cost of coverage cannot exceed 5 percent of family income annually. Program type: North Carolina operates a combination CHIP program called North Carolina Health Choice.
