Revival in the biblical context is often perceived as a powerful wave of spiritual awakening, where individuals and communities turn back to God with renewed fervor and commitment. This phenomenon is not explicitly labeled as ‘revival’ in the Bible, but its essence is captured through various narratives and teachings.

The Bible emphasizes the idea of spiritual renewal, repentance, and turning back to God. Throughout both the Old and New Testaments, there are instances where individuals or communities experience a renewed commitment to God and a restoration of their relationship with Him.

In the history of the church, the term revival in its most biblical sense has meant a sovereign work of God in which the whole region of many churches, many Christians has been lifted out of spiritual indifference and worldliness into conviction of sin, earnest desires for more of Christ and his word, boldness in witness, purity of life, lots of conversions, joyful worship, renewed commitment to missions.

Verse 6 asks God for spiritual renewal (“Will you not revive us again...”) and clarifies what the heart of that renewal is (“... that your people may rejoice in you ”). The end, or goal, of biblical revival is God’s people enjoying God, rejoicing in him, having him as our joy of joys.
