In general, up to 26% of patients developed distant metastasis [ 6, 7 ]. The survival rate of patients with chondrosarcoma is higher than that of osteosarcoma and Ewing sarcoma patients, with 5-year survival rates between 72–75% and 10-year survival rates of 69% [ 6, 8, 9 ].

Survival rate for a young sarcoma patient can be varied anywhere from 5-10 years depending on the age of the patient and site of tumor. A 5 year survival rate for a child younger than 15 years is believed to be 76% and that of a 15-19 years aged child is 59%. Patients with localized tumours have 81% of 5 year survival rate and those with a diffused or metastatic tumours has 15% of 5 year survival rate.

The development of distant metastasis was a significant poor prognostic factor in both the uni- and multivariate analyses. Chondrosarcoma of the bone is a disease with surgery-dependent outcomes; but, however, patients often develop subsequent recurrence of the disease.

Similar to other types of chondrosarcomas, mesenchymal chondrosarcoma can have a negative prognosis depending on several of the aforementioned factors. Generally, the overall five-year survival rate of this type of chondrosarcoma sits at roughly 51%.

Metastatic Disease While chondrosarcoma is a slow-growing tumor, it has the potential to metastasize to other bones and soft tissues, with the lung being the most common site of metastasis. The risk of metastasis varies depending on the grade of the tumor, with high-grade and de-differentiated tumors having the highest risk of metastases.

Previous studies found that low-grade chondrosarcoma had a low rate of metastasis 15 - 18. However, we found that metastasis at presentation was more frequent with low-grade tumors (42.4%) than high-grade tumors (29.9%), a result that requires further verification due to 27.7% unknown cases.
