4. DISCUSSION Low-grade chondrosarcoma showed a good prognosis in many studies. The 5-year survival ranged from 82% to 99% and 10-year survival from 89% to 95%. 7 The local recurrence rate varied from 0% to 18%. 8–11 In our study, the 10-year survival was 88.6%.

Survival rate for a young sarcoma patient can be varied anywhere from 5-10 years depending on the age of the patient and site of tumor. A 5 year survival rate for a child younger than 15 years is believed to be 76% and that of a 15-19 years aged child is 59%. Patients with localized tumours have 81% of 5 year survival rate and those with a diffused or metastatic tumours has 15% of 5 year survival rate.

Giuffrida et al. 5 reported that an age of 50 years or less was associated with a significant OS benefit in chondrosarcoma, but was not an independent prognostic factor. Due to the improvement of diagnosis and treatment technology, only patients after 2000 were included in this study.

Dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma represents a particularly aggressive subtype, with a poor 5-year survival rate of between 0% and 24% [ 2, 83 ]. Based on registry data, the 5-year survival rate of mesenchymal chondrosarcoma is 50% and worsens with increasing age and axial-based tumors [ 84 ].
