The Juilliard School (/ ˈdʒuːli.ɑːrd / JOO-lee-ard) is a private performing arts conservatory in New York City. Founded by Frank Damrosch as the Institute of Musical Art in 1905, the school later added dance and drama programs and became the Juilliard School, named after its principal benefactor Augustus D. Juilliard.
Founded in 1905 as the Institute of Musical Art, Juilliard was the first American institution to rise to the level of its European counterparts. Its original founder, Polish-born Frank Damrosch — the godson of Franz Liszt — saw a need for American musicians to finish their schooling in their own country instead of traveling abroad.
From its advent as the Institute of Musical Art in 1905, Juilliard knew what it was about. Frank Damrosch, its creator, championed “high standards” in his opening address.
