The sciatic nerve emerges from the lower back(lumbar and sacral spine) and runs through the gluteus maximus muscle(buttocks)on both sides, and then passes down the back of the leg to the thigh muscles(hamstring), and calf muscles. Sciatica is nerve pain caused due to injury, irritation, or inflammation of the sciatic nerve. It causes symptoms like tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, and pain while walking. The numbness and pins and needles sensation caused due to sciatica depends upon the severity of the nerve injury. If it's moderate, then numbness due to sciatica may relieve in a few days. If it's of severe form then, treatment consists of muscle relaxants, corticosteroid injections, physiotherapy, surgical approach like laminectomy or discectomy.

How are nerves categorized?Nerves are categorized into three groups based on the direction that signals are conducted: Afferent nerves conduct signals from sensory neurons to the central nervous system, for example from the mechanoreceptors in skin. Efferent nerves conduct signals from the central nervous system along motor neurons to their target muscles and glands.
