What is a stye on my eyelid?A stye is a red, painful lump caused by a bacterial infection in a clogged eyelid gland or eyelash follicle. They are often located on the outer part of your eyelid, but they can also appear on the inner edge of the eyelid sometimes. Most styes are harmless and go away with home remedies like warm compresses.

A stye, also called hordeolum, is a small abscess of the oil gland associated with an eyelash hair follicle. It typically contains Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. Warm compresses can help styes heal faster. Moisten a clean, folded washcloth with warm water and hold it gently against the eye for 5 minutes several times a day for several days. The moist washcloth can be heated in a microwave. This will encourage a stye to open a drainage channel, allowing any pus to drain away. Pus should never be removed by squeezing. A stye that fails to drain can be lanced (opened) by a doctor.

Most styes burst or go away on their own after several days. But cleaning it will help bring the pus out. Then, it will drain on its own. You can do a few things to get rid of it faster:
Can a stye cause a red bump on your eyelid? An internal stye (on the underside of your lid) also causes a red, painful bump. But its location prevents a whitehead from showing up on your eyelid. This type can also go away once the infection is gone. Some leave a small fluid-filled cyst that your doctor will have to cut open and drain. What Causes Styes?
