There are various causes of a burning feeling at the back of the heel. The main reason is due to diabetic neuropathy, in which the foot nerves are damaged leading to tingling and numbness also known as stock and glove neuropathy. The other causes are heel trauma, Achilles tendonitis, heel spur, hypothyroidism, alcoholic neuropathy, foot infections, autoimmune diseases, multiple sclerosis, and kidney failure. Tarsal tunnel syndrome-caused by the compression of the tibial nerve leads to burning, tingling, pain, and numbness in the heel, foot, and ankle. The treatment for this is mainly adequate rest. Taking medications like gabapentin and some steroids helps in reducing nerve inflammation and increases nerve strength. Along with this application of an ice pack or hot fomentation to the legs, submerging the foot in lukewarm salt water, and applying supportive braces also help in reducing burning.
