No, they are not the same thing. These are different diseases. Hernia is a generic term used only to describe the projection of an organ or tissue to an unusual location, through an anomalous opening. In a herniated disc, what protrudes out of the normal spine structure are one or more intervertebral discs. These structures that are located between the vertebrae of the spine end up projecting against adjacent structures, causing the symptoms of a herniated disc (usually compressing the spinal cord or nerve roots, causing lower back pain, weakness or a tingling sensation and numbness in some region of the body, such as legs or arms). Arthritis is another generic term used to describe joint inflammation, which in turn can be caused by several different diseases, such as autoimmune or infectious diseases, for example (it is important to make a difference here between arthritis, which is inflammation, and arthrosis, which is characterized by wear and tear on the joints, however, without necessarily signs of inflammation). Thus, with regard to arthritis, they also tend to cause pain and limitation, they may have symptoms that overlap with a herniated disc, especially when the affected joint is located in the spine, but they are not the same disease.
