  2. A raft in 3D printing is a series of layers in a mesh pattern, built underneath the model you are printing. A brim is a layer along the outside of the model that does not go underneath the model. Neither a raft nor a brim is part of the model itself, but the purpose of both is to improve surface adhesion and limit warping.

Based on their similarities, you may assume they are the same. The difference between them, however, is that rafts go underneath the printed object, whereas brims go around the printed object. A brim can best be described as a flat and horizontal expansion of the printed object’s initial layer.

Rafts are plastic layers placed on a print surface just before you print the object. A raft will help your object to stick to the surface. This is because it has a much more larger surface than the print’s underside. However, a brim is a plastic layer that you have to apply to the print’s first layer. It allows great adhesion onto the surface.
A raft helps when the part has few points of contact with the print bed, and doesn't therefore adhere well at points within and without the part. A brim helps when the part doesn't adhere well around the perimeter of the part.

Both can be designed as either round bottom or arch bottom. The main difference is that a raft is used in conjunction with supports to hold up the object being printed while it is being built. A brim’s main purpose is to hold up overhangs without any need for supports.

  3. People also ask
Are brims better than rafts?Comparison: Rafts use more filament and time than brims or skirts, but offer stronger support and adhesion. Brims are easier to remove than rafts, but may leave marks on the print. Skirts are the easiest to remove, but don’t provide any physical support or adhesion.
What is the difference between 3D printing raft and brim? So, overall 3D printing raft vs brim vs skirt concerning definition can be understood as the first two i.e. the raft and the brim have direct contact with the part that’s supposed to be printed. Whereas the skirt does not have any such contact, instead they can give you an estimation of how the equipment is working and flowing.
When should you use a raft & brim?Support constructions such as Raft, Skirt and Brim can help to optimize the printing process and to identify or eliminate problems before they occur. However, it is important to know when to use them. In summary, a Skirt should actually be present on every print to test filament flow and give the heating elements enough time to heat up.
Do you need a brim & raft if you have a bad first layer?Printing can come with it’s fair share of difficulties, and poor bed adhesion and having a badly printed first layer are definitely part of those difficulties. A Skirt, Brim and Raft can definitely help with providing a better first layer adhesion, prevent warping (not the skirt really, but I’ll get into that shortly), and more.
What are brims & rafts?Brims and Rafts specifically, are similar in the way that they act as a sort of foundation for your 3D parts. Having a bad initial layer or foundation can end up in a print not sticking down to the bed properly, especially with models that don’t have a flat side.
Should I use a raft or brim for my print?A raft will allow for better adhesion for the whole print as the raft attaches to the printing surface and the print attaches to the raft. Rafts go all the way under the print and consist of multiple layers, whereas a brim is only 1 layer and on the outside of the print.
