A sore throat or throat pain is a condition caused either by a virus or bacteria where there is irritation, inflammation, and discomfort in the throat which leads to difficulty and pain while swallowing. The common cause of frequent throat pain is a viral or bacterial infection. Other possible causes are gastroesophageal reflux disease-which leads to acid reflux from the stomach to the throat, laryngeal muscle strain, sinus problems, tonsil infection, dust allergies, exposure to irritants, dryness, and a weakened immune system. Most of the time, sore throat would heal within a week, and for quick relief from sore throat caused by viral infections, no specific treatment is required other than salt water gargling, drinking warm water, plenty of fluids, taking lozenges for soothing relief, and vitamin C supplements for enhancing immunity. If the sore throat is still not relieved, then the doctor might prescribe an appropriate course of antibiotics.
