Any rotation or twisting motion can put a strain on the knee causing a meniscal tear or sprain. The symptoms of a sprained knee and meniscal tear are similar including knee pain, swelling, and stiffness. In a sprained knee, the pain and swelling are above the joint line whereas, in a meniscal tear, the pain is felt below the top attachment of the medial collateral ligament.
