Blackheads are dark in color, are raised and painless

    • They are most commonly seen on the face, but may also appear on the upper back and shoulders

    Causes

Formation of a plug at the opening of hair follicles, due to dead skin cells or oils collection in the opening.

    • When skin around the clogged pore opens, air enters and oxidizes the skin debris and oils, turning it black.

    Risk factors include:

    • Increased production of sebum
    • Accumulation of the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria on the skin
    • Inadequate shedding of dead cells leading irritation in the hair follicle
    • Hormonal changes as seen in adolescence, during the menstrual cycle or while on birth control pills
    • Consumption of drugs containing corticosteroids, lithium, or androgens

    Prevention

    • Cleanse and defoliate your skin regularly
    • Stress can act as a trigger, so get adequate rest
    • If you have oily skin, use oil absorbing products; removing excess oil using blotting paper. Using clay mask once a week is also helpful
    • Use moisturizer daily
    • Avoid over washing
    • Do not pick existing blackheads

Blackheads are a type of acne that can occur on the scalp, just like on the face and other parts of the body. To remove a blackhead on the scalp, one can start by gently exfoliating the area using a scrub or a soft brush to help loosen the buildup of oil and dead skin cells that can clog pores. Next, applying a warm compress to the area can help soften the blackhead and make it easier to remove. Using clean hands or a sterilized tool, gently press around the blackhead to extract it. Be careful not to apply too much pressure, as this can cause irritation or even break the skin. After removing the blackhead, the area should be cleaned and treated with an acne spot treatment or salicylic acid solution to prevent further breakouts. It's important to avoid using harsh or abrasive products on the scalp, as this can cause further irritation or damage to the skin.
