What is a Compatible Time-Sharing System (CTSS)?Description of Resource: The Compatible Time-Sharing System, or the CTSS, was one of the first time-sharing operating systems; it was developed at MIT's Computation Center. CTSS was first demonstrated in 1961, and was operated at MIT until 1973.
What is a Compatible Time-Sharing System?Compatible Time-Sharing System allowed multiple users from different areas to access a single computer simultaneously. Compatible Time-Sharing System, CTSS was demonstrated on MIT’s IBM 709 in 1961 as an experimental time-sharing system. MIT’s one of main projects “Project MAC” is running on a Compatible time-sharing system.
What is a Time Sharing System (CTSS)?Also, unlike some of the other well known early time sharing systems (e.g., the Dartmouth Time Sharing System in its initial implementation as a system for small student projects written in Basic), CTSS from its earliest operational use provided the entire computer and all capabilities that could be run on the computer to its users.
Who invented the Compatible Time Sharing System (CTSS)?Fernando Corbató and two of his MIT Computer Center staff members, Robert Daley and Marjorie Merwin, starting working on the design of the Compatible Time Sharing System (CTSS) in the spring of 1961.
