Research suggests that the average 5-year survival rate for a person with chondrosarcoma is 75.2%. However, if chondrosarcoma has spread to another part of the body, the average 5-year survival rate is 45.7%. The survival rate refers to the proportion of people who are still alive for a length of time after receiving a particular diagnosis.

Survival rate for a young sarcoma patient can be varied anywhere from 5-10 years depending on the age of the patient and site of tumor. A 5 year survival rate for a child younger than 15 years is believed to be 76% and that of a 15-19 years aged child is 59%. Patients with localized tumours have 81% of 5 year survival rate and those with a diffused or metastatic tumours has 15% of 5 year survival rate.

A chondrosarcoma is a rare, malignant (cancerous) bone tumor made up of cartilage cells, the firm tissue that protects the ends of bones. These bone sarcomas usually start in the pelvis, chest, arms, or legs. They can grow fairly large—often bigger than 4 centimeters across. Lower grade chondrosarcomas can grow very slowly over many years.

Most people with chondrosarcoma have a good outlook, but about 6 percent of people have cancer that has spread to distant organs at the time of diagnosis. Low grade cancers have a good outlook with a 5-year survival rate of around 83 percent. High grade cancers have a less favorable outlook. The 5-year survival is 53 percent for grades 2 and 3.
