Located centrally in downtown Cheboygan, the experience of serving as a weekend volunteer keeper at the Cheboygan River Front Range light offers a unique combination of staying in a historic riverfront lighthouse while enjoying all the amenities of a bustling downtown area.

The Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association is proud to announce that they will be opening the Cheboygan River Front Range lighthouse to the public from 8am to 5pm on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

In 1880 building began on a set of range lights to guide vessels through the newly widened Cheboygan River. The front range light was a keeper’s quarters with a tower attached. The lantern was constructed of wood and equipped with a sixth order Fresnel lens. The rear range light was a skeletal tower that was lit on the same day as the front light.

Overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, the lighthouse has stood watch over both sailing vessels and recreational boats that use the canal to pass through. Its bright white light is visible for up to 5 nautical miles in all directions. By 1962, it had been decommissioned and replaced with a modern-day buoy orientation system.

We were lucky enough to stop by this lighthouse when it was open for tours. The guide was excellent and you can tell all the hard work that is going into this restoration. This lighthouse is unusual in the way it is designed and how the light is set up. No charge but donations accepted.
