A chalazion is caused by noninfectious meibomian gland occlusion, whereas a hordeolum usually is caused by infection. Both conditions initially cause eyelid hyperemia and edema, swelling, and pain. With time, a chalazion becomes a small nontender nodule in the eyelid center, whereas a hordeolum remains painful and localizes to an eyelid margin.

A hordeolum and chalazion can look very similar. But they will feel different. While a chalazion may start as a red and tender area of the eyelid, it usually turns into a lump that’s not painful. A hordeolum, on the other hand, is quite painful. A hordeolum is caused by a bacterial infection while a chalazion is the result of eyelid inflammation.

A chalazion is a blocked oil gland that appears on the inside of the eyelid, usually surfacing as a bump. An eye stye (or hordeolum) is a smaller pimple-like bump that appears on the upper or lower eyelid due to a blocked oil gland. It is typically near the eyelash and lives on the outside of the eyelid.

A chalazion is a non-contagious bump that forms when a meibomian gland becomes obstructed. It is larger than a stye and typically found on the upper eyelid. It causes mild discomfort and may impact vision if it enlarges. A hordeolum, or stye, is a distressing bump that forms at the base of an eyelash or within an oil gland.

A chalazion is a less painful chronic infection on the inside edge of the eyelid (conjunctival side) affecting the Zeis or meibomian (oil-secreting) glands. Styes, or hordeola, are painful infected lesions on the edge of the eyelid (eyelash follicles) that come on quickly and eventually break open and drain.

Chalazion is the popular term used to describe an acute inflammation of the Meibomian glands. The appearance of the lesion is a reddish nodule on the eyelid edge, like a cyst. It usually resolves itself in most cases. It is important to avoid manipulating the lesion, to avoid contamination, and for symptomatic relief, make hot compresses with a gauze soaked in warm water, for 10 minutes, at least four times a day. Keep the area clean and if there is no improvement in the lesion within 3 days, look for the ophthalmologist as antibiotics may be necessary.

How do I know if I have a hordeolum or chalazion?A hordeolum is caused by a bacterial infection while a chalazion is the result of eyelid inflammation. If a hordeolum isn’t treated properly, it can turn into a chalazion. If your eye feels irritated and you notice a lump on the eyelid, it may be hard to tell if you have a hordeolum or a chalazion. Your other symptoms may provide additional clues.
What is the difference between chalazia and hordeola?Chalazia and hordeola are both bumps on the eyelid. The cause of a hordeolum, also called a stye, is bacterial infection. Chalazion is the result of inflammation. Knowing whether you have a chalazion or a stye can help ensure you treat the lump the best way to help it heal.
