Apples and pears are both healthy fruits that can be consumed regularly. Apples are typically more affordable than pears and are equally healthy. It is wise to eat the apple and pear skins because they provide additional fiber, vitamins, potassium, and other nutrients. Increasing daily intakes of fruit as well as vegetables would very likely reduce deaths caused by cardiovascular disease and cancer in the US population. Unfortunately, it is estimated that only 2 in 10 Americans meet the current fruit and vegetable intake recommendations. Aim for at least two one cup servings daily of raw or cut-up whole fruit daily. One-half cup of dried fruit is also considered a serving. Look for dried fruit that doesn’t have added sugar or preservatives. Both apples and pears are high in pesticide residues according to the Environmental Working Group(EWG). These chemicals are present on the skin as well as within the fruit. The only way to significantly reduce intake of these chemicals is to purchase organically grown apples and pears or to grow your own. Although this is not necessary to be healthy, those concerned with ingesting pesticides and other agricultural chemicals should consider consuming organically grown apples as much as possible.

What apples make a good apple pie?Our favorite apple pie recipe calls for Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Golden Delicious apples, or a mix of all three. Honeycrisp apples err on the sweeter side, with a distinct honey-like flavor; Braeburns toe the line between sweet and tart; and Gold Delicious apples intensify in flavor when baked.
What should an apple pie taste like?(If you want that, you can get it at McDonald's, two for $1.) Apple pie should be sweet but never cloying, with a bare hint of cinnamon—this is an apple pie, after all, not a cinnamon pie. Finally, it should taste overwhelmingly of fresh apples, with a bright, clean flavor. Some apples just don't make good pies.
