ASCII defines 128 characters, which map to the numbers 0–127. Unicode defines (less than) 221 characters, which, similarly, map to numbers 0–221 (though not all numbers are currently assigned, and some are reserved).

Unicode is a superset of ASCII, and the numbers 0–127 have the same meaning in ASCII as they have in Unicode. For example, the number 65 means "Latin capital 'A'".

Because Unicode characters don't generally fit into one 8-bit byte, there are numerous ways of storing Unicode characters in byte sequences, such as UTF-32 and UTF-8.

What is the difference between ASCII and Unicode?Due to its scope, Unicode represents far more characters than ASCII. Standard ASCII uses a 7-bit range to encode 128 distinct characters. Unicode, on the other hand, is so large that we need to use different terminology just to talk about it! Unicode caters to 1,111,998 addressable code points.
Does Unicode support ASCII?Still, as we’ll see, ASCII is supported by most modern computer systems and is the basis for many other character encoding standards, including Unicode. How Does ASCII Work? ASCII uses 7 bits to represent a total of 128 characters.
What is ASCII character encoding? What Is ASCII? ASCII is one of the most popular pre-Unicode character encoding standards and is still used in limited facets of computing. Developed by the American National Standards Institute, ASCII was first published in 1963. It is based on the same character encoding used for the telegraph.
What is the difference between ASCII and UTF-8 encoding? For instance, ASCII character codes make it easy to convert text from lowercase to uppercase and vice versa — all it takes is changing one bit. And even though ASCII has been replaced by Unicode in most major applications, making it technically obsolete, the first 128 characters of UTF-8 use the same encoding as ASCII.
