Acculturation can be an exchange of anything, be it dressing sense or languages. For example, you are a resident of India; you were first obliged to wear Kurti all the time. But as time flies, you came in contact with other people of different backgrounds. You start to have a look at other people dressing style.

To return to the cooking analogy, acculturation would be similar to adding an ingredient that is still recognizable in the final meal: basil leaves into an omelet, for example. This ingredient can still be distinctly recognized in the final dish, but both the ingredients and the product are different than before the acculturation.

Main examples of acculturation are related to religious beliefs, the loss of the native language or the intervention of foreign elements in the original culture. The most palpable examples are found in immigrant families who have to adapt to the culture of the country where they emigrate.

From studying Polish immigrants in Chicago, they illustrated three forms of acculturation corresponding to three personality types: Bohemian (adopting the host culture and abandoning their culture of origin), Philistine (failing to adopt the host culture but preserving their culture of origin), and creative-type (able to adapt to the host culture while preserving their culture of origin).
