  2. The Sevier fault is spectacularly displayed on the north side of Utah Highway 12 at the entrance to Red Canyon, where it offsets a 500,000-year-old basaltic lava flow. The fault is one of several active, major faults that break apart the western margin of the Colorado Plateau in southwestern Utah.

The Sevier orogeny was the result of convergent boundary tectonic activity, and deformation occurred from approximately 160 million years (Ma) ago to around 50 Ma. This orogeny was caused by the subduction of the oceanic Farallon Plate underneath the continental North American Plate.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sevier_orogeny
The Sevier orogeny was a time of active horizontal shortening and vertical thickening of the crust, in response to the Pacific Plate subducting beneath the North American Plate. The thrust faults carried their respective thrust sheets up to 50 miles of displacement and the large folds have amplitudes of 5,000 to 10,000 feet.
