  2. over·steer ˈō-vər-ˌstir : the tendency of an automobile to steer into a sharper turn than the driver intends sometimes with a thrusting of the rear to the outside

Understeer and oversteer are vehicle dynamics terms used to describe the sensitivity of a vehicle to steering. Oversteer is what occurs when a car turns (steers) by more than the amount commanded by the driver. Conversely, understeer is what occurs when a car steers less than the amount commanded by the driver.

In layman’s terms, oversteering is when you lose control of your car and slide into the ditch “butt first.” A more technical description is that the rear of your vehicle slides out of line, either ending up with you moving sideways or, in some cases, leading to a complete spin.

Is an oversteering car out of control? An oversteering car is never out of control. Oversteer just means the driver must allow the fronts to travel a bigger radius, just like the rears are, so that the car doesn’t continue to rotate. Remember, the only reason a car rotates is because the front is turning on a tighter radius than the rears are.
Is oversteer correctable? If managed properly, oversteer is very correctable. Some drivers even prefer a little bit of it in the quest to get a nice, balanced car. In order to be comfortable with oversteer the performance driver must understand what it is, why it happens and how to correct it. That, and have plenty of experience doing it.
How do you correct oversteer?Correcting oversteer isn’t hard. The mnemonic device to remember is CPR: Correct. Pause. Recover. First, you correct by keeping your front tires in the direction you’re trying to go. That may consist of adding more and more steering input as the rear of the car gets further off line.
What causes a car to oversteer? The most common reason for oversteering is entering a corner with too much throttle, resulting in the rear tires spinning up and beginning to slide. This is more prominent in cars with a limited-slip differential (LSD) since both tires can spin off at the same speed and limit traction.

When an understeer vehicle is taken to the grip limit of the tyres, where it is no longer possible to increase lateral acceleration, the vehicle will follow a path with a radius larger than intended. Although the vehicle cannot increase lateral acceleration, it is dynamically stable. See more
