If the surfaces that contact the block deck and head are metallic then I would use either aluminum paint or K&W Copper Cote, and install while still sorta tacky. If the gaskets have composition surfaces, and metallic "fire rings", don't use paint, but maybe use the grease mentioned above.

Weld the head of the valve to the ID of the seat, stem up, with a mig welder. Then take an axle/dent puller with the appropriate chuck. Tighten on the valve stem and two or three strikes and they are out.

If the heads are flat use their copper gaskets to help sealing spray both sides of the gasket with dull aluminum or silver spray paint three light coats per side this works for me every time. Be careful on torque those old threads don't like to be pulled to much if your using head bolts.
