  2. Partition of Bengal, (1905), division of Bengal carried out by the British viceroy in India, Lord Curzon, despite strong Indian nationalist opposition. It began a transformation of the Indian National Congress from a middle-class pressure group into a nationwide mass movement.

    Lord Curzon announced the Partition of Bengal on 20 July 1905. The idea was to divide Bengal into two – Bengal and Eastern Bengal. The Western Bengal, Bihar and Orissa were retained under Bengal while the remaining portion of Bengal and Assam formed the Eastern Bengal.

    Bengal was divided into the provinces of Bihar and Orissa. Assam was separated into its own province. The authorities, unable to put an end to the protests, agreed to reverse the partition. On December 12, 1911, King George V announced at the Delhi Durbar that eastern Bengal would be absorbed into the Bengal Presidency.

    The partition of India led to the partition of Bengal (1947) dividing the British Indian province of Bengal into two. The western part with predominantly Hindu population became a part of India (West Bengal), while the predominantly Muslim eastern part (East Bengal) became a part of Pakistan.
